‘Wicked’ Movie Hits Delays Anew
The much-anticipated film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical is experiencing production delays.
The film, with previous release dates announced for December 2019, then December 2021, is now expected to start production in June 2022.
The delay, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is related to the production moving shooting locations from Atlanta to the U.K.
Early this year, In the Heights director Jon M. Chu has been announced to helm the production, replacing Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot) who was previously announced to direct.
The musical’s creators, Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz are penning the script, with Schwartz announcing that the movie will include two new original songs.
The musical’s studio, Universal, has not announced a new release date for the musical. No word on casting has been announced, either.
Wicked is the third Broadway musical who has generated over a billion dollars in ticket sales. Only two other musicals have generated as much: The Lion King and The Phantom of the Opera.
Wicked is an adaptation of a novel written by Gregory Maguire. Touring productions of Wicked have graced our shores, with the latest run last 2017 that featured Jacqueline Hughes as Elphaba and Carly Anderson as Glinda.
