Whitney Houston Biopic Broadway Musical in the Works
A Broadway musical about the life of Whitney Houston, which will be adapted from the upcoming biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody, is in the works, according to Variety.
The film is set to premiere in US cinemas on December 23, 2022 starring Naomi Ackie as Whitney Houston, Stanley Tucci as Clive Davis, Ashton Sanders as Bobby Brown, Tamara Tunie as Cissy Houston, and Clarke Peters as John Houston. It is directed by Kasi Lemmons.
Whitney Houston passed away at 48 years old, the night before the 2012 Grammy Awards. She starred in the 1992 film The Bodyguard, which had a West End stage adaptation in 2012. Last February 2020, 9 Works Theatrical announced that it was set to stage the musical at The Theatre at Solaire in November 2020, but plans were disrupted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Houston also played the Fairy Godmother in the 1997 film adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella starring Brandy in the titular role.
