Where Theater Meets Hogwarts: ‘Harry Potter: A Yule Ball Celebration’ Is An Immersive Family-Friendly Experience
Get ready for a sirius-ly spellbinding night.
If you’ve ever wanted to be part of the Wizarding World (who hasn’t?) or experience becoming a theater actor for a day, this is your chance. You don’t even need to wait for an owl to deliver your Hogwarts acceptance letter!
The Manila leg of Harry Potter: A Yule Ball Celebration has officially begun. For our muggle friends in the audience, the experience is inspired by the Christmas Eve dance held during the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and is part of a bigger, worldwide event marking 25 years since the first film was released. GMG Productions has even announced they’re extending its run until December 13th.
Riddikulus-ly Magical Details
This writer can confidently say that the best part of the experience is how it visually and literally lets you step inside the world of Harry Potter. Guests are not required to dress for the occasion, but you may regret not wearing your best formal robes and Hogwarts house colors once the doors open—no one wants to feel like a clueless muggle amongst fabulously-dressed magical folk.
Theater fans will surely appreciate the production design, and fans of the books and movies could spend hours just marveling at all the little details. There’s a cozy, candlelit “common room” where you can mingle before the ball officially starts. There are portraits of students and Hogwarts alumni everywhere, as well as my personal favorite: a fireplace.

The ballroom itself makes you feel like you’re in the movie. Just like in Goblet of Fire, the Great Hall is transformed into a snowy, silver-draped, holiday spectacle, which coincidentally matches because the Christmas season has officially started for most Pinoys. Of course, there’s also a replica of the goblet itself where you can enter your name for a chance to be named a Yule Ball champion! And don’t you worry, there won’t be a visibly concerned headmaster shaking you and questioning why you’re doing that.
Sirius-ly Immersive Theater
Theater fans, actors, and creatives will be delighted to know that yes, the Yule Ball Celebration is actually an immersive, interactive experience! There are two masters of ceremonies (with Rissey Reyes, Krystal Kane, Matt Gador, and Edrei Tan alternating) as well as a student representative for Slytherin, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Gryffindor (Vic Robinson, Czar Decena, Clariza Sevilla, Manu Casapao, JV Fulgencio, Chill Paloma, Alyanna Wijangco, Miguel Salaya) to guide and inspire you to get into character.
It’s as if someone used the Finestra spell, because the traditional fourth wall in theater is nowhere to be found. You could actually engage in conversation with the actors and there’s an actual program, just like the balls we’re used to. The event starts with the hosts teaching everyone the Champions Waltz. Attendees take part in activities such as a scavenger hunt, a trivia game, a musical performance, a duel, and a fashion parade. They also encourage healthy competition between houses with chants!

Now you’re probably wondering: What if one is too shy to actually be part of the show the whole time and completely transform into a student from Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, or Durmstrang? Don’t you worry because there are plenty of other experiences to enjoy if you’re not feeling like being the main character just yet. The celebration includes a marketplace where you can shop for official merchandise such as robes and wands, as well as themed food and drinks like The Locket of Slytherin, The Diadem of Ravenclaw, and cookies based on your house. For the introverts and mga trentahin, there are plenty of couches where one can take a break from the dance floor and bask in wonder at the goings-on.
I Solemnly Swear That I Am Up to Good Moves
Of course, at the heart of the experience itself is to have a ball. It’s why guests are also encouraged to wear their best evening dress—this writer went as a Beauxbatons student wearing her Gryffindor boyfriend’s scarf—to complete the Yule Ball experience.
If your high school prom didn’t live up to standards, this dance will. Aside from music from Harry Potter, they also play bops from different generations as the night comes to an end. You can enjoy the dance floor with any of the special wizards, witches, and muggles in your life because it’s open to all ages and is legitimately kid-friendly. There are special dates dedicated to family sessions if parents want to make sure their children have other tiny wizards and witches to interact with. Going stag also won’t be a problem; you’ll still enjoy the celebration solo because everyone’s a Potterhead who just wants to have a grand time.
By the end of the ball, guests can even experience snow, in the heart of Metro Manila at that! Pardon the cliché description, but it really did feel like a winter wonderland.
