‘Miss Saigon’ Announces Open Auditions for Tam

GMG Productions has announced open auditions for the role of Tam in the upcoming Asian tour of Miss Saigon for Manila and other territories.

The auditions are open to kids aged 4-8 years old. Pre-registration will run from January 5 to 9, 2024 via GMG Productions’ website. Registration will close on January 9, 6:30pm. The audition proper will be held from January 11 to 12 at The Theatre at Solaire.

Audition Criteria:

TAM (Age Range 4 years old- 8 years old)

The character is male identifying, of Vietnamese Heritage with a playing age of three years old. The role can be portrayed by any gender. However, note that auditionees with long hair may be required to cut it if cast. The maximum height restriction is 115cm. While the age of the child is variable, the height is not.The children must be confident – but be able to be still and silent.

The child must have a BASIC understanding of English.

The role of Tam does not speak or sing. There is no preparation required for the auditions. Auditionees can expect to play games, some of which may involve them being picked up off the ground. Ensure that they wear suitable attire and closed toed shoes. They can expect to hear sound effects, such as a helicopter and gunshots, and prop guns and knives may be utilised.

Note that the performance schedule will involve late nights, which may prove challenging for some children.

Children must be available for the rehearsals and performances from around 21 March to 5 May 2024, for the Manila run and 1 June to around 14 July 2024 for the potential further dates in Asia (rehearsal dates subject to change). The schedule rotates, with each child being present in the theater for a number of shows each week.

Children must be based in Metro Manila and are responsible for transport to and from the theatre.

The employment of children in the production will be in accordance with the obligations of the DOLE.

A retelling of Giacomo Puccini’s classic opera, Madame ButterflyMiss Saigon moves the love story to 1970s Vietnam. The audience follows a young Vietnamese woman named Kim as she navigates the chaos of Saigon during the Vietnam War, falls in love with an American G.I. named Chris, and embarks on an extraordinary three-year quest for reunion, all while harboring a heart-wrenching secret. 

Miss Saigon has music by Claude-Michel Schönberg with lyrics by Richard Maltby Jr. and Alain Boublil, adapted from original French lyrics by Alain Boublil, with additional lyrics by Michael Mahler. The new production is directed by Laurence Connor with musical staging by Bob Avian and additional choreography by Geoffrey Garratt. The production design is by Totie Driver and Matt Kinley based on an original concept by Adrian Vaux; costume design by Andreane Neofitou; lighting design by Bruno Poet; projections by Luke Halls; sound design by Mick Potter; and orchestrations by William David Brohn. Music supervision is by Alfonso Casado Trigo and Guy Simpson.

The Manila season opens on March 23 and closes on May 5 at The Theatre at Solaire. Casting has yet to be announced.
