‘Wicked’ Movie to be Released in Two Separate Films
Wicked film director Jon M. Chu has just announced on Twitter that the upcoming movie adaptation will be split into two films. “So get ready because WICKED is finally coming to you on successive Christmas holidays beginning December 2024,” shares Chu.
“…it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to wrestle the story of WICKED into a single film without doing some real damage to it,” says Chu. “As we tried to cut songs or trim characters, those decisions began to feel like fatal compromises to the source material that has entertained us all for so many years. So we decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one WICKED movie but TWO!!!!!”
It was only last November that Chu also took to Twitter to announce that Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will be playing Elphaba and Glinda respectively. Early last year, it was announced that Chu, who also directed the movie adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights, will be directing the film, replacing Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot). The Wicked movie had previous release dates announced for December 2019, then December 2021.
