The theater community is finding innovative ways to share their performances this Christmas season. Since many companies are still unable to open their doors to live audiences, they have shifted to streaming their productions online, reaching a wider, global audience as a result. The holiday season is also a chance to present some festive stories and classic tales for the whole family.

From concerts to short plays to pantomimes, UK theater companies are making sure that there is enough entertainment that can still be enjoyed by audiences from the safety and comfort of their homes. Among the wide array of digital theatre productions available during the holidays are the five versions of A Christmas Carol and three free streaming shows for children.

Here are some more Christmas shows going online for the family this holiday season:

Cinderella (December 16 to January 16)

Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company will be bringing its traditional pantomime production online this year.

Written and directed by Adam Penford, this in-person production aims to bring some much-needed joy to the festive season. The show follows the classic adventure of Cinderella as she tries to outwit her Ugly Stepsisters and win the heart of the dashing Prince all with the help of her best friend Buttons and her Fairy Godmother.

The show is filled with panto humor, upbeat musical numbers, and all the familiar characters from the beloved fairy tale. The production was specially adapted to ensure a safe, comfortable, and magical experience for all audiences.

Festive Tales (December 19)

The Royal Shakespeare company will be streaming an hour-long evening show of music and reflection to bring merriment to the season in spite of the “pandemic winter of discontent”.

The program will include carols, songs and festive readings, including extracts from the company’s past productions.

Tickets cost £10. Click here for tickets and more details.

The Snow Queen (December 19, 20-24, 26)

Iris Theatre presents an online, interactive storytelling adventure inspired by the classic story of The Snow Queen.

The adventure follows the protagonist Holly who has had a new story delivered to her but is unable to open the pages because of the freezing cold. Audiences will be able to join Holly on her magical journey, helping her solve her unique dilemma.

Families will be able to participate in the story while also downloading a free activity pack filled with fun games and craft ideas based on the show.

The show is recommended for children aged 4 and above.

Tickets cost £20 per device and the performances will take place live on Zoom. Click here for tickets and more details.

Christmas at the (Snow) Globe (December 21 to January 5)

There will be performances of classic Christmas carols that the audience can merrily sing along to as the show progresses.
