“This House” Next Stream for National Theatre at Home
This House was written by James Graham (Ink, Quiz), and directed by Jeremy Herrin (People, Places and Things). While it is based on real events, the play is a fictionalized account of a turbulent period in British politics.
The play will be streamed as part of the UK National Theatre at Home initiative. The production enjoyed two sold-out runs at the National Theatre, a live broadcast in 2013 and a West End transfer.
The title is derived from the name given to the House of Commons by members of parliament and the play takes place between the February 1974 general election and the 1979 vote of no confidence during the term of Prime Minister James Callaghan. The action is set in the corridors of Westminster, mainly in the offices of the Labour and Conservative Chief Whips.
This House chronicles the murky world of British politics in the 1970s as the members of each political party employ any means necessary to gain control and to shape the future of the nation during an era of chaos and uncertainty. The original National Theatre cast includes Phil Daniels, Vincent Franklin, Philip Glenister, Lauren O’Neil, Richard Ridings, Julian Wadham, Charles Edwards, and Ed Hughes.
The stream will be available on the National Theatre’s Youtube Channel from May 28 at 7pm (London time) to June 4.
This play will be the latest in the lineup of National Theatre at Home productions, following A Streetcar Named Desire, Barber Shop Chronicles, Antony and Cleopatra, Frankenstein, Twelfth Night, Jane Eyre, Treasure Island, and One Man, Two Guvnors.
