Lincoln Center’s 2014 production of Act One, based on Broadway legend Moss Hart’s early life, is now available online!

Act One was adapted by James Lapine (Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods) from Hart’s autobiography of the same name. The play explores Hart’s early life of poverty in The Bronx and his struggles to become a famous Broadway writer and director. It also featured his collaboration with Pulitzer Award-winning playwright George S. Kaufman.

Hart would become a successful playwright and director, his most well-known production being the hit Lerner and Loewe musical My Fair Lady in 1956, for which he won a Tony for Best Director.

The play premiered on Broadway at the Vivian Beaumont Theater in Lincoln Center on April 17, 2014. The production starred Santino Fontana, Tony Shalhoub, and Andrea Martin. Both Martin and Shalhoub played multiple roles in the play as important figures in Hart’s life. Fontana played the young Hart while Shalhoub played the older version as well as Hart’s father and George S. Kaufman.

This production is streaming as part of the Lincoln Center at Home initiative, Broadway Fridays, where New York’s Lincoln Center offers free online streams of selected Broadway productions. This is part of the center’s efforts to continue bringing the best of the performing arts to audiences during the COVID-19 crisis.

The stream will be available on the Lincoln Center’s Youtube Channel from June 19 at 8pm ET (June 20, 8am Manila time) to July 3 at 8pm ET (July 4, 8am Manila time.)
