Dulaang UP’s Bagong Cristo is now streaming online!

Written in 1907 by Aurelio Tolentino, this socialist drama revolves around Jesus Gatbiaya, a labor leader whose teachings empowered fellow laborers to fight against social injustice and inequality. It is a proletarian reinterpretation of the story of Jesus Christ, directed by Alexander Cortez.

Boo Gabunada (alternating with Esteban Fulay Jr.) leads the cast of professional and student theater artists as the new Christ, Jesus Gatbiaya. He is joined by Gwyn Guanzon (alternating with Randy Villarama) as Frayle/Maginoo, Greg de Leon as Cabesang Andoy/Maginoo, Jojo Cayabyab as Dimaliwat, Telle Manuel (alternating with Gel Basa) as Doña Salud, Rica Nepomuceno (alternating with Telle Manuel) as Dolores, Rachel Jacob (alternating with Telle Manuel) as Neneng, Kleigh Amparo (alternating with Charm Aranton and Elaiza Toledo) as Biheng, Nico Varona (alternating with Esteban Fulay Jr.) as Justo/Maginoo, Achi Reblando as Bata, Pat Valera (alternating with Niño Mendoza and Emman Mante) as Magdangal/Maginoo, Lehner Mendoza (alternating with Vincent Macapobre) as Capitang Berto/ Maginoo, Joseph Nabong (alternating with Mandrake Ferrer) as Limbas/ Maginoo, and the Dulaang UP Ensemble– Gary Bacani, Miah Canton, Angela Cepeda, Gian Domine, Dolly Dolot, Satya Edilo, Ela Figura, Ajee Garcia, Lex Limjoco, Jack Luna, Jessette Namin, Migo Santiago, and Regina Valerio.

Joining Cortez in the Artistic Team are Dexter M. Santos (choreography), Pat Valera (dramaturgy), Mitoy Sta. Ana (costumes), Meliton Roxas Jr. (lights), Io Balanon (set), Krina Cayabyab (music), Arvy Dimaculangan (sounds), Joy Cerro (assistant direction), and Mikko Angeles (video).

The production ran from November 8 to December 3, 2017 at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater of UP Diliman.

This is the fourth production that the company has made available online in light of the community quarantine. The first production was Dulaang UP’s Ang Nawalang Kapatid, followed by UPPT’s Fathers and Sons, and UPPT’s The Kundiman Party.
