“SpongeBob SquarePants” Broadway Musical to be Filmed for Nickelodeon
Deadline reports that “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical” is set to be filmed for TV in front of a live theater audience at Nickelodeon this December.
Tina Landau, the director of the Broadway musical, will return to direct the special entitled “The SpongeBob Musical: Live On Stage!” Original Broadway cast members Ethan Slater (SpongeBob SquarePants), Gavin Lee (Squidward Tentacles), Danny Skinner (Patrick Star), Brian Ray Norris, (Eugene Krabs), and Wesley Taylor (Sheldon Plankton) will be returning. Christina Sajous will be joining as Sandy Cheeks.
The ensemble will include Kyle Matthew Hamilton, Katie Lee Hill, Curtis Holbrook, L’ogan J’ones, Jai’len Josey, Kelvin Moon Loh, Lauralyn McClelland, Vasthy Mompoint, Bryonha Parham, Oneika Phillips, Jon Rua, JC Schuster, Abby C. Smith, Robert Taylor Jr., and Allan Washington.
An air date has yet to be announced.
“SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical” is based on the Nickelodeon animated television series entitled “SpongeBob SquarePants.” Conceived and directed by Tina Lindau, with a book by Kyle Jarrow, orchestrations and arrangements by Tom Kitt, and choreography by Christopher Gattelli, the musical opened on Broadway in December 2017. It tied “Mean Girls” as the most Tony-nominated musical in 2018 with 12 nominations including Best Musical.
The production featured original songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper & Rob Hyman, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants, T.I., and Domani & Lil’C, and songs by David Bowie & Brian Eno, Tom Kenny, and Andy Paley.
The show closed on Broadway in September 16, 2018, and a North American tour opened on September 22, 2019.
