Local ‘Othello’ Online Production to Stream Live
Need another dose of Shakespeare? Don’t miss the upcoming local stream of Othello this August 14 from 7:45 PM.
A one-hour version of Shakespeare’s classic tale of the destructive power of jealousy and suspicion will be performed on Zoom by the members of Ana Valdes Lim’s Theater Space group. This version of the play aims to present the story in a format most resembling a radio or an audio drama. Zoom cameras will be off to ensure minimal visual information and to keep everything audial. Audiences are encouraged to use earphones to better appreciate the performance.
This unique production is directed and sound designed by Nelsito Gomez. The cast features Tarek El Tayech as Othello, Dean Daniel Rosen as Iago, Uriel Villar as Desdemona, Miel Abong as Emilia, Txavi Evangelista as Cassio, Nic Campos as Brabantio/Lodovico, and Edward Solon as Duke of Venice/Montano.
Othello tells the tragic tale of the titular Moorish general who marries a beautiful Venetian noblewoman named Desdemona. Iago, one of Othello’s vicious soldiers, manipulates the latter into believing his wife is unfaithful, and Othello’s jealousy and rage drive lead to fatal consequences. This play was also one of the earliest explorations of racism in theater.
This is the fifth feature of Theater Space, a group of volunteer artists longing to make their art known, according to Ana Valdes Lim’s website. They previously performed A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Macbeth, a ‘miscast’ version of Romeo and Juliet, and Twelfth Night.
Othello will be broadcast on Zoom on Saturday, August 14, at 7:45 PM.
This upcoming event is completely free, but don’t forget to register here.
