Liesl Batucan is REP’s New Artistic Director
Repertory Philippines has just announced that Liesl Batucan is the company’s new Artistic Director. Previously appointed artists in the position have included Zenaida “Bibot” Amador, Baby Barredo, and Joy Virata.
Batucan has been the company’s Managing Director since February 2018. Prior to this, she was the Associate Artistic Director of Tanghalang Pilipino, the resident theater company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).
According to REP’s Board of Trustees, “Liesl brings a wealth of experience to her new role of providing artistic leadership in the planning and implementation of quality-based productions. The Board of Trustees wishes her every success and will give her all the support she needs to lead Repertory Philippines through the 21st century.”
Batucan was most recently seen as Sue in the company’s staging of Father’s Day. She has had an extensive career with REP, having performed in more than a hundred of its theater productions. She won the Philstage Gawad Buhay Awards for Best Female Featured Performance in a Play for playing Karen Weston in the company’s production of August Osage County in 2014 and for playing the Beggar Woman in the company’s production of Sweeney Todd in 2009. She has also served as the company’s Assistant Director in a great number of productions over the course of over two decades.
As Artistic Director, Batucan will be in charge of the planning and implementation of REP’s upcoming season line-ups. She has started performing her new role since June 1 while they prepare to produce REP’s upcoming original musical, “The Quest for the Adarna“. The show will be running from September 14, 2019 to January 12, 2020 at the Onstage Theater of Greenbelt 1.
