Now Streaming: Shakespeare’s Richard II

The 1997 film Richard II, based on the 1995 National Theatre production of the same name, is now streaming online.

Directed by Deborah Wagner, who also helmed the stage production, Richard II stars Fiona Shaw in the titular role. Joining her are Donald Sinden (Duke of York), Richard Bremmer (Henry Bolingbroke), Julian Rhind-Tutt (Duke of Aumerle), Kevin McKidd (Harry Percy) and Paola Dionisotti (Duchess of York). Hildegard Bechtler serves as production designer.

This marks the second installment of The Shows Must Go On‘s Shakespeare season. It is preceded by the one-man show Being Shakespeare starring Simon Callow. All productions part of the Shakespeare line-up will be available online for 7 days.

The Shows Must Go On has been streaming musicals and concerts for free as early as April this year, including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ SuperstarThe Phantom of the Opera, Love Never DiesCatsThe War of the Worlds, and The Wind in the Willows, among many others. While theaters have remained closed due to the pandemic, audiences are encouraged to donate to different arts causes.
