According to Baz Bamigboye of The Daily Mail, there are two planned film releases for Cameron Mackintosh’s critically-acclaimed musical.

The first one will be screened in movie theaters around the world on October 16, celebrating the film’s 25th Anniversary. It will star Eva Noblezada as Kim, and our very own Jon Jon Briones as the Engineer, where he was nominated for an Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical last year. The film will feature footage from the 2014 gala show and the closing night of the recently concluded West End revival. Speculations of this began at Mackintosh’s closing speech last February.

Both actors will also reprise their roles on Broadway when it opens in 2017.

Bamigboye also talked about the possibility of Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Steve Jobs) directing a Hollywood motion picture in 2018.

It probably will, since The Phantom of the Opera reached us during its worldwide film screening 5 years ago. 🙂

We had Miss Saigon at the CCP I think that was 2001 or 2002. I was a HS sophomore and basically begged my uncle for a balcony ticket. ??

As someone who lives in Saigon, one should ask why the Saigonese do not want this staged here. It is like looking at Angeles City and asking is what happened there with the US Bases all that city is? Is that all the Philippines was at the time? Miss Saigon is again a Western retelling of what happened. Just throwing this out there – why are Pinoys so interested in retelling another nation’s story and not focusing on its own history? Had an interesting talk with locals about this and they resent the impression this leaves outsiders that they had to become “miss saigons” during the American War.

Interesting food for thought. To be fair though, there are a lot of local productions that talk about Philippine history. At the Philstage Gawad Buhay Awards, the musical that won the most awards was a musical about Apolinario Mabini entitled Mabining Mandirigma. And there are a lot of plays and musicals about Rizal being staged locally on an annual basis. 🙂

Theater Fans Manila true but again that is purely local. Like Rak of Aegis or the recent Francis M musical. All of it is still exclusively delivered (only 1 venue in metro Manila) and not marketed nationwide and to the Filipino diaspora. Whereas Miss Saigon is staged everywhere in a language accessible to a global audience.

Yes but Miss Saigon is staged internationally by foreign producers, and they choose to cast Filipinos based on their talent. Filipinos didn’t really come up with the score or anything like that. But you have a good point. Maybe we should start putting our original material on a global stage. That would be quite a feat. 🙂

Theater Fans Manila that would be awesome! Because Rak of Aegis and other original works should actually go to the Filipino diaspora. Not only the cheap one-off acts from TV shows…. This is how Bollywood became big. This is why Indians can now become CEOs of international companies like Google instead of just middle-level managers. If Pinoys don’t promote its own culture no one else will
