Unica Hijas and Laro, two plays about sexuality, the former about/ for lesbians and the latter about/ for gays, are set to be staged by the Barefoot Theatre Collaborative as a twin bill, aptly entitled Unica Hijas/Laro, this Pride Month.

Mikaela Regis’ Unica Hijas, first staged at the Virgin Labfest in 2022, follows two girls studying in an all-girl Catholic school who are caught by a nun in an almost-kiss. With less than an hour left until their future is decided, the two are forced to confront each other, their past, present, and their own selves. Ash Nicanor and Joy Delos Santos will be returning to reprise their roles. Pat Valera also returns to direct the play.

Floy Quintos’ Laro, last staged under Artist Playground in 2019, is an adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler’s La Ronde, with additional material by Miguel Castro. Consisting of 10 interlocking encounters between pairs of characters, the play tells the story of 10 characters from different walks of life. It explores their never-ending search for happiness and true love within Manila’s gay community. Phi Palmos, Gio Gahol, Jay Gonzaga were some of the actors in the 2019 production. John Mark Yap returns to direct the play.

Laro is also holding open auditions for its all-male cast. Online auditions are being held from April 5 to 9, and callbacks are set for April 15. Interested participants can click on this link for more information.
