Sara Bareilles Teams Up with J.J. Abrams for Apple Series Musical Dramedy
Tony Award nominee (Best Score for Waitress) and upcoming Tony Awards co-host Sara Bareilles is teaming up with Hollywood director J.J. Abrams for a half-hour 10-episode dramedy entitled Little Voice. The series has been picked up by Apple.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bareilles, who’s also serving as one of the show’s executive producers, is also going to work on the series with Waitress book writer Jessie Nelson. Nelson will be writing and directing the first episode and will serve as the series’ showrunner and executive produce alongside Abrams and Bad Robot.
Little Voice, which is also the name of Bareilles’ first album, is described as a love letter to the diverse musicality of New York. It will explore the journey of finding your voice in your early 20s. Bareilles will provide original music for the series.
Bareilles is fresh off playing Mary Magdalene in NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live last Easter after starring as Jenna Hunterson in Waitress the Musical, where she wrote the production’s music and lyrics. She will be hosting the Tony Awards with Tony nominee Josh Groban (Best Lead Actor in a Musical for Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812) on June 10 at 8pm, EST.
