Now Streaming: ‘Simoun’ by Ballet Philippines
Based on Dr. Jose Rizal’s El Filibusterismo, the 2016 production of Ballet Philippines’ Simoun is now streaming online.
With libretto and choreography by Paul Alexander Morales and music by Joed Balsamo, Simoun was staged as a twin-bill production with Crisostomo Ibarra. While Simoun was on its world premiere, Crisostomo Ibarra, which was also a work by Morales and Balsamo, first premiered in 2010 and was later on performed with live music in June 2012, commemorating the close of the Philippines’ yearlong celebration of Jose Rizal’s sesquicentenary.
The streaming cast features Jean Marc Cordero as Simoun, Denise Parungao as Maria Clara, Rita Winder as Pepay ang Mananayaw, Garry Corpuz as Isagani, Erl Sorilla as Basilio, Sarah Alejandro as Doña Victorina, Emmanuelle Guillermo as Juanito Pelaez, Jemima Reyes as Paulita Gomez, and Gia Gequinto as Juli.
With Morales and Balsamo in the creative team are Bianca Perez (restager), Toym Imao (set designer), Joaquin Jose Aranda (lighting designer), Regine Tinoy (associate lighting designer), Jet Melencio (costume designer), Ruelo Zendo (videos), GA Fallarme (scenic projection designer), Jethro Joaquin (sound designer), and Luis Alarco (technical director), accompanied by the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Gerard Salonga.
The streaming production was recorded from the October 23, 2016 performance at the CCP Main Theater. You can watch the full show below.
