Now Streaming: ‘Cats’ Musical is Online
In celebration of its 40th anniversary, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats is streaming online once again.
The filmed production is from the 1998 stage performance featuring Elaine Paige as Grizabella, John Mills as Gus, John Partridge as Rum Tum Tugger, Jacob Brent as Mistoffelees, and Jason Gardiner as Alonzo.
The show opened on the West End in 1981 and on Broadway in 1982, where it won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical and the Tony Award for Best Musical, among others. An international touring production was most recently staged at The Theatre at Solaire in 2019 featuring Joanna Ampil as Grizabella.
A Tom Hooper-directed movie musical featuring Jennifer Hudson as Grizabella, Ian McKellan as Gus the Theater Cat, Judi Dench as Old Deuteronomy, James Corden as Bustopher Jones, Taylor Swift as Bombalurina, Jason Derulo as Rum Tum Tugger, Rebel Wilson as Jennyanydots, Idris Elba as Macavity, Robbie Fairchild as Munkustrap, and Francesca Hayward as Victoria was also released in 2019.
Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show features a group of cats called The Jellicles who come out and celebrate the Jellicle Ball.
