Now Streaming: ‘Ang Larawan’ the Movie is Online
The 2017 movie musical adaptation of Ang Larawan is now streaming on Netflix.
Ang Larawan features Rachel Alejandro as Paula Marasigan, Joanna Ampil as Candida Marasigan, Paulo Avelino as Tony Javier, Sandino Martin as Bitoy Camacho, Cris Villonco as Susan, Aicelle Santos as Violet, Nonie Buencamino as Manolo, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo as Pepang, Robert Arevalo as Don Perico, and Celeste Legaspi as Doña Loleng.
The musical is based on the original play A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino by National Artist for Literature Nick Joaquin, translated in Filipino by National Artist for Theater and Literature Rolando Tinio, with music by National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab and original costume design by National Artist for Theater and Design Salvador Bernal. It follows the plight of unmarried sisters Candida and Paula Marasigan, the daughters of high-profile painter Don Lorenzo Marasigan. The story is set in Intramuros right before WWII.
The film is directed by Loy Arcenas. Arcenas had the cast go through an unorthodox one-year rehearsal process before they even started filming to ensure that the actors understood everything, from the script, to the blocking, to their characters’ objectives.
The musical most recently had a concert version entitled Contra Mundum, which ran at the MET for free for one night only last May 6. Contra Mundum is currently streaming online only until tomorrow.
The stage musical, entitled Larawan, first opened in 1997, starring Celeste Legaspi as Candida and Zsa Zsa Padilla as Paula. It was restaged in 1998, with Legaspi reprising her role opposite a young Rachel Alejandro, who played the role of Paula.
