The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is set for a live-action adaptation.

Disney recently acquired the rights to the Broadway show, with the same producing team that brought the live-action Aladdin to the screen.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, first produced in 2005, is one of the top 100 longest-running Broadway shows and has been staged around the world. Locally, it was staged in 2009 by Atlantis Theatrical.

The Broadway show tackles the story of a group of six-graders joining the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. They each have their own reasons to win while they tell their life story along with their passions and hopes through the competition.

The original Broadway show was directed by James Lapine, with music and lyrics by William Finn and a book by Rachel Sheinkin
