“Dear Evan Hansen” Movie Eyeing Ben Platt and Kaitlyn Dever to Star
According to a report by Deadline, Ben Platt (The Politician) is expected to reprise the role he originated on Broadway as the title character in the Tony Award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen. American actress and singer Kaitlyn Dever is also currently in talks to play the female lead.
Stephen Chbosky (Wonder) will be directing the film and Steve Levenson, who wrote the book for the musical, will be penning the script. Lyricists Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land, The Greatest Showman) who wrote the music for the show will also serve as executive producers.
The musical was nominated for nine Tonys and won five including best musical, best actor, best featured actress, and best score.
Dear Evan Hansen follows the story of a young man struggling with social anxiety and who gets unintentionally caught up in an elaborate deception when the family of a classmate who committed suicide mistakes one of Hansen’s letters as their son’s suicide note. As Hansen finds the love and acceptance he has yearned for, he feels conflicted about telling the family the truth.
Dever will be playing Zoe, the classmate’s sister, who begins a romantic relationship with Hansen after he forms a closer bond to the family.
Dever was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in the Netflix limited series Unbelievable. She was also recognized as a BAFTA Rising Star for her starring role alongside Beanie Feldstein in Booksmart. Incidentally, Feldstein will be starring opposite Platt in the movie adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along.
So far, no other casting decisions have been revealed for Dear Evan Hansen.
