Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures has announced that it is set to produce a musical adaptation of the 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians, based on Kevin Kwan’s book of the same name.

The production is set to be directed by Jon M. Chu, who also helmed the film. Known for bringing stage musicals to the big screen (In the Heights in 2021, two-part Wicked movie in 2024 and 2025), Crazy Rich Asians will mark Chu’s Broadway debut.

Crazy Rich Asians follows the story of Rachel Chu, an American-born Chinese economics professor who accompanies her boyfriend, Nick Young, to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Upon arrival, Rachel discovers Nick’s incredibly wealthy and traditional family, navigating through the opulent and often absurd world of Singapore’s elite. As Rachel struggles to gain acceptance from Nick’s disapproving mother and contends with jealous socialites, she must ultimately decide whether love is enough to overcome the obstacles of family and society.

The show will feature music by Helen Park, a book by Leah Nanako Winkler, and lyrics by Amanda Green and Tat Tong. Casting has not been announced, but a timeline for a pre-Broadway engagement will be released soon.
