Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the two-part theatrical production which first opened in the West End in 2016 and on Broadway in 2018, is returning to the Lyric Theatre on Broadway as a one-part show this November 16.

The new reimagined version will also open in its other North American destinations– returning to the Curran in San Francisco on January 11, 2022, and premiering at the Ed Mirvish Theatre in Toronto on May 2022.  It still retains its two-part format in Melbourne, Australia where it is currently running, in the West End, where it is scheduled to re-open on October 14, and in Hamburg, Germany, where it is returning for previews on December 1.

“Given the challenges of remounting and running a two-part show in the US on the scale of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and the commercial challenges faced by the theatre and tourism industries emerging from the global shutdowns, we are excited to be able to move forward with a new version of the play that allows audiences to enjoy the complete Cursed Child adventure in one sitting eight times a week,” said producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender.

“This is an unprecedented moment in theatre history. After being closed for more than 15 months, almost all of Broadway and theatre across North America will return before the end of the year,” they add. “Given the challenges of remounting and running a two-part show in the US on the scale of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and the commercial challenges faced by the theatre and tourism industries emerging from the global shutdowns, we are excited to be able to move forward with a new version of the play that allows audiences to enjoy the complete Cursed Child adventure in one sitting eight times a week.”

The show’s creators Jack Thorne and John Tiffany said that they’ve been working hard on the new version throughout the lockdown. “It has given us a unique opportunity to look at the play with fresh eyes and we have been inspired by the entire creative team every step of the way.”

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is written by Jack Thorne based on the original story written by J.K. Rowling, John Tiffany, and Thorne. It is directed by John Tiffany.

The story begins nineteen years after Harry Potter left Hogwarts School for Magic. Harry is now a hard-working employee of the Ministry for Magic and father to three teenaged children. However, his younger son, Albus, struggles with the responsibility and weight of being Harry Potter’s son.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was nominated for 11 Olivier Awards and won 9 including Best New Play and Best Director for Tiffany in 2017, and was nominated for 10 Tony Awards and won 6 including Best Play in 2018.

Returning cast members have yet to be announced.
