Ballet “Darangen ni Bantugen” to Stream Online
Choreographed by Gener Caringal and Ronilo Jaynario, Darangen ni Bantugen was first performed in 2008 as an original ballet created for the Philippine Ballet Theatre (PBT). The dance is accompanied by the music of Jesse Lucas, which fuses indigenous wind and percussion instruments with pre-recorded original chants.
Depicting the story of the legendary Maranao hero, Bantugen, Darangen ni Bantugen explores the themes of love, life and death, and good and evil through modern, contemporary, and classical dance interpretations of the lead character’s odyssey, demise, and resurrection.
The audience is transported from The Kingdom of Bumbaran to the savage lands where Bantugen battles fire, earth, wind, and water, to the Kingdom-between-Two-Seas, to the Sky World where resides the Angel of Death. The stylized renditions of original Marano costumes are by National Artist for Theatre Design Salvador Bernal.
The 2016 production of Darangen ni Bantugen will be streaming starting on May 9, 7:30pm at PBT’s YouTube channel, available only until May 15. After Merry Widow, this is the second production that the company will be making available online.
PBT is also accepting donations for their displaced artists and production personnel affected by the pandemic through the following channels:
