‘Anino ng Suob’ by Dulayan Theater Organization to be Staged in Lucena This October
Dulayan Theater Organization, Inc. is set to stage Anino ng Suob, a new full-length Filipino play by Palanca awardee Dr. Marco Antonio Rodas, this October at the Pacific Mall Event Theatre in Lucena City, Quezon. The production will run for 17 performances from October 16 to 18 and October 22 to 25.
Co-directed by Rodas and John Lenard Casiño, the play unfolds over four days of Holy Week in Dolores, Quezon in the first years
of the 2000s — a town where faith healing, folk Catholicism and Rizalista devotion have grown into one another, and where the
ritual of the suob, the smoking of a body with tawas, kamanyang, incense and dried palm, is not superstition but medicine,
inheritance and law.
The story follows Tomas and Rene, two members of a family bound by a shared past but separated by years of silence. As old wounds and family secrets begin to surface, the suob becomes a symbol of memory, faith, and secrets that never completely disappear.
The cast features Zedric Lorzano and Eddson Guerra alternating as Tomas Agustin; Oz Kenshin Rodas and Jules Vincent Alva as Rene Agustin; Caressa Zapanta, Evalyn Cuarez, and April Joy Panganiban as Maring Agustin; and Ellyssa Canzana, Julieanna Mae Martinez, and Jessica Althea Bundalian as Lea.
Also alternating in their respective roles are Jey Grimaldo, Maridarah Serdon, and Lorena Potestades as Dolores; Randolph Balmes and John Jasel Pabria as Lauro/Oros; Paolo Christian Cardenas and Rick Anthony Misiera as Narsing/Isko; Simeon Felipe Ramos and Jonathan Reyes as Mr. Gunigundo Gutierrez; Paolo Reynoso Lorenzo and Martin Tabernilla as Carlo; Anie Jane Par and Rezza Mhay Maaño as Susie; and Geriel Sacristia and John Lenard Casiño as Karyas.
They are joined by ensemble members Don Nicson Mandigma, Noredine Gardose, Daryll Guerrero, Justine Apritado, Justine Xyra Saludes, John Roldan Claveria, John Ricardo Oabel, Kristine Joy Dumaran, Jhea Zayreen Ricafrente, Joven Merilo, and Herold Nieva.
The production brings together an all-Quezon creative team led by Rodas (playwright, director, and lighting designer) and Casiño (director). They are joined by Arch. Dolan Kim Reyes (set designer), Glacy Ricablanca (costume and make-up designer), Christopher M. Fernandez (props designer), Kyle Anunciacion (sound designer), Zedric Lorzano (lighting designer), and John Kristoffer Tibor (technical director).
Anino ng Suob marks the 18th production of Dulayan Theater Organization, Inc., a Lucena City-based theater company founded in 2013 as KATAGA–Lucena Tanghal, the first theater-focused branch of KATAGA — Samahan ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas. The company is accredited by the Securities and Exchange Commission and the National Youth Commission.
Led by Artistic Director Rodas and Managing Director Evalyn Cuarez, the company has developed a body of work drawn largely from the history, culture, and identity of Quezon province. Its previous productions include Dolores (2013), Usapang Babae / Pekpek Jam (2013, 2015), Igba (2014, 2016, 2018), Na’ay Po, Lambanog (2024), and Kunswelo (2025).
Anino ng Suob runs for 17 performances on October 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24, and 25, 2026 at the Pacific Mall Event Theatre in Lucena City, Quezon. The play is performed in Filipino, with passages in Latin. Tickets are priced at ₱500 and are available via tickets.dulayan.org.
