National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes’ adaptation of Carl Orff’s cantata, Carmina Burana, returns this June, featuring the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philippine Madrigal Singers with soprano Lara Maigue. Preceded by Rama, Hari, Carmina Burana is the second production of Alice Reyes Dance Philippines (ARDP) for 2024, running from June 14-15 at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater.

Inspired by the goliardic verses set to Carl Orff’s score, Reyes tells the story of a community experiencing the joys of life, drinking, and love, through exuberant, erotic, and pagan movements. The ballet, with sets and costumes by the late National Artist for Theater Design Salvador Bernal, was restaged in 1978, 1980, 1983, 1990, 2003, 2018, and 2022.

Also featured in the first half of the program is Reyes’ Dugso, a work inspired by rituals performed by the tribes of Bukidnon, Mindanao, set to National Artist for Music, Dr. Ramon Santos’ choral piece Ding Ding nga Diyawan. First performed in 1972, the Reyes-Santos collaboration was last staged in 1990 and is being brought back for a new generation of audiences.

Norman Walker’s romantic pas de deux, Summer’s End, and Augustus ‘Bam’ Damian III’s After Whom, both aiming to showcase the company’s dynamism and bravado in neo-classical, modern, and contemporary ballet, complete the evening’s repertoire. Summer’s End premiered in 1980, with music by Frederic Chopin and costume design by Walker, while After Whom premiered in 2005, with music by Jerrold Tarog.

Presented by the Cultural Center of the Philippines and Alice Reyes Dance Philippines, the production also features the Kilyawan Boys Choir and dance trainees from the University of the East’s Silanganan Dance Troupe.

Carmina Burana will run on June 14 at 7:30pm and on June 15 at 2pm and 7:30pm at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater. All performances will have live music by the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philippine Madrigal Singers.

Tickets are available through Ticketworld, the CCP Box Office (8832-3704), or through ARDP (ardancephilippinesinc@gmail.com, Viber:0967-153-6173).
