‘El Fuego del Alma’ Returns for Special Run at Circuit Makati This October
Following its run at SinePop in Quezon City earlier this year, Porvenir’s El Fuego del Alma, a Filipino adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke, is returning for a special benefit run at Circuit Makati this October.
Presented by Porvenir in partnership with ArtDirected as part of Circuit Makati’s ARTober celebration, the production will run for eight performances on October 24–25 and 30–31 at Art Directed Studio, located at the Upper Level of Circuit Lane, next to Blackbox Theater at Ayala Malls Circuit.
The Circuit Makati engagement moves the production from its original venue, SinePop in Quezon City, into a larger, 100-seat space. Rather than simply transferring the original staging, the company will reimagine the production for Art Directed Studio, adapting it to the architecture of the new venue while retaining the intimacy of its previous run.
The original cast will reunite for the engagement.
“This invitation gives us the opportunity to discover the production again,” says director and dramaturg Mark Mirando. “El Fuego del Alma was created in close proximity to its audience, so bringing it into a new space means asking new questions about how the audience encounters the story. More than extending the run, we want this version to belong specifically to Circuit Makati.”
Translated into Filipino by playwright Eljay Castro Deldoc and directed by Mirando, El Fuego del Alma reimagines Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke for Filipino audiences. The play centers on the struggle between the spiritual and the physical, desire and restraint, and the lives people are expected to lead versus the lives they secretly long for.
The production was first presented as a staged reading before receiving its full staging at SinePop earlier this year.
The ARTober performances will also serve as a benefit run for Porvenir, with proceeds supporting the company’s plans to bring its work beyond Metro Manila through a regional tour.
“For us, reaching a larger audience also means looking beyond Manila,” Mirando adds. “We want this run to help us take the next step toward bringing the production to audiences in other parts of the country.”
Performances are scheduled for October 24 at 3 PM and 7 PM; October 25 at 3 PM and 7 PM; October 30 at 7 PM; and October 31 at 1 PM, 3 PM, and 7 PM.
Early bird tickets are priced at ₱1,000, while regular tickets are ₱1,250.
El Fuego del Alma is presented by Porvenir in partnership with ArtDirected as part of Circuit Makati’s ARTober celebration, with Circuit Makati, ARTober, Art Directed, and Ayala Malls Circuit as event partners.
