Filipino Adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ ‘Summer and Smoke’ Returns as a Full Staging This July
From an intimate staged reading last May, Porvenir returns this July with a fully staged production of El Fuego del Alma (The Fire of the Soul), a Filipino adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke reimagined within a Philippine context.
Adapted by playwright Eljay Castro Deldoc and directed by Porvenir artistic director Mark Mirando, El Fuego del Alma relocates Tennessee Williams’ Summer and Smoke to a provincial town in the Philippines.
The production follows Alma Ortega, a woman caught between spiritual devotion and earthly desire as she struggles to reconcile duty, longing, and human connection.
“We wanted to create a version of this story that feels close to home,” says Mirando. “Alma’s longing, her restraint, and her search for connection feel deeply Filipino.”
The role of Alma Ortega is shared by Nour Hooshmand, Hariette Mozelle, and Opaline Santos, while Sandino Martin and Vincent Pajara alternate as Juanito. The production also features Madeleine Nicolas, Rolando Inocencio, Sheryll Ceasico, JP Lopez, Janna Cortes, Ingrid Joyce, Johnny Maglinao, and Tristan Bite.
Presented as an intimate found-space production, El Fuego del Alma places audiences in close proximity to the performers, creating a theatrical experience built on emotional immediacy and shared space.
El Fuego del Alma runs July 17–19, July 31, August 1–2, and August 21–23 at Sine Pop, Cubao, Quezon City. Friday performances are at 7 PM, while Saturday and Sunday performances are at 4 PM and 7 PM.
Tickets are priced at ₱1,800 through Ticket2Me. Audiences may use the promo code UNANGLIYAB until June 30 to receive ₱300 off.
Porvenir is an independent theater company dedicated to creating original Filipino plays and reimagining classic works for contemporary audiences. The group’s debut production was Lost in Transit, a staged reading presented in February 2026 that featured two original one-act plays, Ang Ngipin ng Busaw and Lost Parcels, both written by Shenn Apilado and directed by Mirando.
