Lea Salonga Performs ‘A Whole New World,’ ‘Reflection’ in Disney Princess Concert
Disney Legend Lea Salonga performed two of her signature Disney songs, “A Whole New World” from Aladdin and “Reflection” from Mulan, as part of Disney Princess: The Ultimate Concert Celebration, which is now streaming on Disney+.
In a fitting nod to her unique place in Disney history, Salonga performed the two songs back-to-back, representing both Disney Princesses for whom she provided the singing voice. She first performed “A Whole New World” as a duet with Brandy, who starred as Cinderella in the 1997 television film Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, before following it with a solo performance of “Reflection.”
Salonga provided the singing voice of Princess Jasmine in Disney’s 1992 animated film Aladdin, before returning to Disney as the singing voice of the title character in the 1998 animated film Mulan. She was named a Disney Legend in 2011 for her contributions to the company.
“A Whole New World,” written by Alan Menken and Tim Rice, went on to win the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song. “Reflection” was written by Matthew Wilder and David Zippel.
The concert brings together what Disney describes as the largest gathering of Disney Princess talent ever assembled, featuring performers whose work spans Disney animation, live-action films, and the stage. Joining Salonga are Auli’i Cravalho (Moana, animated film), Catherine Laga’aia (Moana, live-action film), Anika Noni Rose (The Princess and the Frog, animated film), Jodi Benson (The Little Mermaid, animated film), Halle Bailey (The Little Mermaid, live-action film), Paige O’Hara (Beauty and the Beast, animated film), Susan Egan (Beauty and the Beast, Broadway musical; Hercules, animated film), Judy Kuhn (Pocahontas, animated film), and Brandy (Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, television film).
Disney Princess: The Ultimate Concert Celebration was performed live at Disney California Adventure on August 13 as part of D23 Day at Disneyland Resort, ahead of D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. The concert features lights, projections, and fountains accompanying performances celebrating music from Disney Princess stories.
