Walt Disney Studios’ Emmy-winning filmed version of Hamilton, which has been available on Disney+, is now coming to the big screen in the Philippines!
The Philippine release will be available in selected cinemas for one week only starting October 1. You can find the list of cinemas below.
The musical, which celebrated its 10th anniversary on Broadway on August 6, premiered in cinemas in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico on September 5. According to Playbill, it will also be screened in the U.K. and Ireland beginning September 26, and in Australia and New Zealand on November 13.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, the original cast reunited on June 8 at the 78th Annual Tony Awards for a special performance.
Playbill notes that the theatrical release expands on the Emmy-winning version available on Disney+ with the addition of Reuniting the Revolution, a special prologue featuring new interviews with the original cast and creative team as they reflect on the show’s impact on their lives.
The filmed version was originally scheduled to be released in U.S. cinemas on October 15, 2021, but the release was postponed due to the pandemic. In a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon, Miranda explained: “We filmed most of the original cast performing in Hamilton in 2016, and we always wanted to release it theatrically, but then the pandemic hit, and so we decided to release it on streaming so that everyone could see it at home whenever they wanted.”
Captured live at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, the proshot features the original Broadway cast: Lin-Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler, Christopher Jackson as George Washington, Daveed Diggs as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson, Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison, Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton, Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds, and Jonathan Groff as King George III.
Hamilton is based on Ron Chernow’s biography, with book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler, and musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire. The production design team includes David Korins (scenic design), Paul Tazewell (costume design), Howell Binkley (lighting design), Nevin Steinberg (sound design), and Charles G. LaPointe (hair and wig design).
The musical opened on August 6, 2015, on Broadway and received a record-breaking 16 Tony nominations. It went on to win 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score for Miranda.
An international touring production of Hamilton, brought by GMG Productions, also enjoyed a sold-out run in Manila at The Theatre at Solaire from September 17 to November 26, 2023.
