‘Papet Pasyon’ to Run this Palm Sunday

Papet Pasyon, Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas’ annual Lenten tradition, returns to the stage this Palm Sunday, March 24 at the Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio Teatro Papet Museo.

Written by National Artist Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio, Papet Pasyon is the Philippines’ 1st puppet passion play for children and Teatrong Mulat’s longest-running play. The one-hour performance narrates the life, passion, and death of Jesus Christ. It has been the vow of Teatrong Mulat to perform Papet Pasyon for the young and young-at-heart.

First staged at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in 1985, Papet Pasyon has been presented in churches, schools and other venues in Metro Manila and Bulacan until it found its permanent home at the Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio Teatro Papet Museo in Teacher’s Village, Quezon City in 2006. During the pandemic (2021 and 2022), Mulat produced two stage-to-film versions which were livestreamed via Teatrong Mulat’s Facebook page. In 2023, Papet Pasyon was staged at the recently renovated Metropolitan Theater of Manila.

Papet Pasyon is written by Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio, with music by Rodolfo de Leon. Completing the creative team are puppet designers Bernadette Solina-Wolf, Maurice Carvajal, Carol Castro, Daniel Tayona, Romerico Romero, Carlito Camahalan, Sig Pecho, and Aina Ramolete; set designer Ohm David; lighting designer Gabo Tolentino; sound designer Arvy Dimaculangan; and costume designer Darwin Desoacido.

Papet Pasyon will run for two shows on March 24, 3:30pm and 5:30pm at the Amelia Lapeña-Bonifacio Teatro Papet Museo (#64 Mapagkawanggawa St., Diliman, Quezon City). The shows are free and open to the public. No registration required.
