Bridgerton TikTok Musical wins Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album
The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical has won this year’s Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album.
The album was created by Emily Bear and Abigail Barlow, two fans of the Netflix period drama, Bridgerton. After the first season premiered on Christmas Day 2020, the two decided to answer the question “What if Bridgerton was a musical?”
According to a report by Entertainment Weekly, they were first inspired by some dialogue from the show which became the song “Ocean Away.” They ended up composing a total of fifteen songs. They posted their compositions on TikTok and these went viral due to the popularity of the show and the prolonged quarantine due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Bridgerton is a Netflix series based on the novels of Julia Quinn, centered on the lives and loves of the Bridgerton siblings. The first season, based on the book “The Duke and I” and which inspired the award-winning album, focused on the romance between Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page). The second season, which premiered last March 25 and is based on the book “The Viscount Who Loved Me,” focuses on the love story between the eldest Bridgerton, Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) and Miss Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley).
The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical notably beat out Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella, the cast recording of Girl from the North Country, Les Misérables: The Staged Concert, Burt Bacharach and Steven Sater’s Some Lovers, and Stephen Schwartz’s Snapshots.
In their acceptance speech, Bear and Barlow dedicated their award to all “female producers, composers, engineers that are still struggling to gain recognition and support.”
