Shakespeare Webinar Series Happening this January
Students, teachers, playwrights, and actors will have a chance to take part in the upcoming 3-day webinar series, To double business bound: Shakespeare as Academic and Artistic Practice, to take place via Zoom from January 26-28.
Each session will run from 5-8 pm Philippine Time (PST) and 10 am-1 pm in the UK (GMT). The webinar will also be livestreamed through the Facebook and YouTube channels of the UP Department of English and
Comparative Literature.
The series explores the intersections between academic and artistic practices around Shakespeare, and
asks how these might work in a Philippine context. It will tap speakers from leading academic and theatrical institutions in both the Philippines and the UK.
The event is sponsored by the British Council Connections Through Culture Program and the Department of English and Comparative Literature of the University of the Philippines in cooperation with the Shakespeare Institute at Stratford-Upon-Avon of the University of Birmingham.
The program will include the following speakers and topics:
● Shakespearean Academics and/or/as Artists (Michael Dobson, Director, Shakespeare Institute; Ricardo Abad, Artistic Director, Arete, Ateneo De Manila University)
● Interview with Lucy Bailey, director of Titus Andronicus (The Globe, 2014), The Winter’s Tale (RSC, 2013), The Taming of the Shrew (RSC, 2012), Julius Caesar (RSC 2009), and several other Shakespeare productions.
● Cutting Shakespeare for Performance (Abigail Rokison Woodall, Deputy Director, Shakespeare Institute)
● Shakespeare as Source Text: Creating New Work from Old (Tracy Irish, Royal Shakespeare Company)
● Untranslatability, Translation & Adaptation (Jessica Chiba, Shakespeare Institute; Guelan Luarca, Ateneo de Manila University; Ron Capinding, Ateneo de Manila University)
● Teaching Shakespeare through Performance (Aileen Gonsalves, Artistic Director, Butterfly Theatre Company)
● Teaching Shakespeare to Filipino Students (Judy Ick, Chairperson, Dept. of English and Comparative Literature, University of the Philippines)
