Starting today, the movie adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights will finally be available to audiences in the Philippines via HBO Go. The film started streaming on HBO Max last June 11, a streaming service that is unfortunately still unavailable in the country.

Set in the New York neighbourhood of Washington Heights, In the Heights weaves together an ensemble of characters during a summer of seismic change in their lives, with much of the action taking place at one intersection central to the neighborhood.

The scent of hot coffee hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies a vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic shop owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who saves every penny from his daily grind as he imagines, hopes, and sings about a better life.

Joining Ramos in the cast are Corey Hawkins as Benny, Leslie Grace as Nina Rosario, Melissa Barrera as Vanessa, Olga Merediz as Abuela Claudia, Daphne Rubin-Vega as Daniela, Stephanie Beatriz as Carla, Dascha Polanco as Cuca, Gregory Diaz IV as Sonny, Marc Anthony as Sonny’s father, Jimmy Smits as Kevin Rosario, and Noah Catala as Graffiti Pete, and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Piraguero.

John M. Chu directed the film from a screenplay by Quiara Alegría Hudes, based on the Tony Award-winning stage musical, whose music and lyrics were written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, book by Quiara Alegría Hudes, and concept by Miranda. Miranda, Hudes, Scott Sanders, Anthony Bregman and Mara Jacobs produced the film, with David Nicksay and Kevin McCormick serving as executive producers.

Miranda completed his first draft of the stage musical during his sophomore year at Wesleyan University, where it was staged as an 80-minute one-act musical for 3 days. It was staged Off-Broadway in 2007, and opened on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in March 9, 2008. It garnered 13 Tony nominations and won four—Best Musical, Original Score for Miranda, Choreography for Andy Blankenbuehler, and Orchestrations for Alex Lacamoire and Bill Sherman. The Original Cast Recording also won the Grammy for Best Musical Show Album and the production was named as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

You can download the HBO Go app at the App Store or Play Store on your device. You can also access HBO Go via Cignal or at https://www.hbogoasia.ph/. HBO Go can be accessed via Android TV, Apple TV, LG TV and Samsung Smart TV and comes with AirPlay and Google Cast functionality.
