WATCH: UPPT’s “The Kundiman Party” Now Streaming Online!
The UP Playwrights’ Theatre’s (UPPT) staging of Floy Quintos’ The Kundiman Party is now available for streaming!
Directed by Dexter M. Santos, the play was originally staged at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater of UP Diliman in April 2018. It was then re-staged in May 2019 at the PETA Theater Center.
The Kundiman Party revolves around a retired singer, Maestra Adela Dolores, and her belief in the transformative power of the Kundiman art song. When she meets a young, tech-savvy activist, Bobby, her long-dormant sense of Nationalism is awakened. Together, they embark on a crusade that surprisingly becomes a viral sensation. Their eccentric form of protest and its dangerous consequences are the stuff of bittersweet comedy about the times we live in and the choices we all must make.
The cast stars Shamaine Centenera-Buencamino as Adela and Kalil Almonte as Bobby. They are joined by Frances Makil-Ignacio (Mayen), Stella Cañete-Mendoza (Helen), Jenny Jamora (alternating with Missy Maramara as Mitch), Miah Canton (alternating with Arya Herrera and Teetin Villanueva as Antoinette), Rica Nepomuceno (alternating with Melisa Camba as Melissa), Farley Asuncion (Ludwig), Rachel Jacob (Maila), and Teroy Guzman (Senator Juancho Valderama).
Besides Quintos and Santos, the Artistic Team also includes Monino Duque (Lighting Designer), Mitoy Sta. Ana (Production Designer), Krina Cayabyab (Musical Director), Ryan Cayabyab (Additional Kundiman Arrangements for Piano), Marvin Olaes (Dramaturg), Steven Tansiongco (Video and Graphics Designer), Nour Hooshmand & Charles Yee (Assistant Directors), Meliton Roxas Jr. (Associate Lighting Designer), JC Inocian (Photographer), and Io Balanon (Resident Technical Director).
This is the third production that the company has made available online in light of the community quarantine. The first production was Dulaang UP’s Ang Nawalang Kapatid, followed by UPPT’s Fathers and Sons.
