Tony Award-winning musical “Come From Away” will soon be coming to theaters near you!

The Mark Gordon Company announced Wednesday that it has picked up rights to the Broadway musical. David Hein and Irene Sankoff, the married writing team who wrote the book, music, and lyrics for Come From Away, will be writing the screenplay for the said film adaptation.

Nominated for seven Tony Awards and winning Best Direction of a Musical, the show tells of the true events which transpired after the September 11 attacks, when over 7,000 people aboard 38 planes were forced to land on a small town called Gander in Newfoundland and Labrador. More than just a tale of friendship in the midst of crisis, Come From Away is a story of resilience of the human spirit, set to beautiful Celtic-rock music.

“A film adaptation [gives] us the chance to share this celebration of the best of humanity with audiences everywhere. We are happily overwhelmed that people want to see stories about people caring for others with incredible generosity and compassion,” said Sankoff and Hein in the same press release.

MGC will finance the film and Entertainment One (eOne) will handle worldwide distribution on “Come From Away.” MGC’s Sara Smith and Jenna Berger will oversee the project for the company.

Raffy is currently in his fourth year studying Intarmed — he usually has trouble explaining it to people so instead he just says he's a second-year medical student — in the University of the Philippines - College of Medicine. He was last seen drowning in theatre and film. If found, please report to the nearest authorities. Or just treat him to someplace nice. Medical school can get really exhausting.
