Now Streaming: ‘Red’ West End Revival Starring Alfred Enoch, Alfred Molina
Inspired by the life of American abstract painter Mark Rothko, the West End revival of Red, is streaming online for a limited time.
Written by John Logan, Red follows Rothko working on a commission to paint a group of murals for the Four Seasons restaurant in New York. As he works, his assistant Ken prepares the materials – mixing paints, building frames, and priming the canvases. Throughout the process, however, Ken also boldly questions Rothko’s theories of art and his motives for agreeing to a commercial project while Rothko bemoans the rise of pop art.
The production is the 2018 revival at the Wyndham’s Theatre in London, directed by Michael Grandage (Frozen). This version sees Alfred Molina (Art, Fiddler on the Roof) reprising his Tony-nominated role of Rothko with Alfred Enoch (How to Get Away with Murder) making his West End debut playing the fictional assistant, Ken.
Other members of the creative team include Christopher Oram (set and costume design), Neil Austin (lighting), and Adam Cork (sound).
The original production opened at the Donmar Warehouse in London in December 2009 followed by a run on Broadway in 2010, starring Molina as Rothko and Eddie Redmayne as Ken. The show won the 2010 Tony Award for Best Play with Redmayne winning the Tony for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play.
Audiences can watch the full production on The Shows Must Go On YouTube channel. The channel has been streaming musicals and concerts for free as early as April this year, including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Phantom of the Opera, Love Never Dies, Cats, The War of the Worlds, The Wind in the Willows, and An American in Paris among many others. Most recently, it has been featuring concerts entitled West End Unplugged every Saturday and Shakespeare productions every Tuesday to raise money for the theater industry in the UK.
While theaters have remained closed due to the pandemic, audiences are encouraged to donate to different arts causes.
