“Falsettos” Musical Now Streaming for Free
Lincoln Center’s 2017 production of Falsettos, the Broadway musical about a modern family, is now available online!
Falsettos is a musical written by William Finn (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee) and James Lapine (Into the Woods) with music and lyrics by Finn. The show premiered on Broadway in 1992 and was nominated for seven Tony Awards, winning Best Book and Best Original Score. It was revived in 2016.
This production was filmed live at the Walter Kerr Theatre in January 2017 for Live From Lincoln Center and stars Christian Borle, Stephanie J. Block, Andrew Rannells, and Brandon Uranowitz, all of whom were nominated for Tony Awards for their performances. The revival was also nominated for Best Revival of a Musical.
The show centers on the modern family of Marvin, who leaves his wife, Trina, to be with his male lover, Whizzer. The first act deals with how this new set up impacts all members of the family, including Marvin and Trina’s young son, Jason. The second act deals with the events leading up to Jason’s Bar Mitzvah and the evolution of Marvin and Whizzer’s love story. The musical explores the themes of Jewish identity and culture, gender roles, and gay life during the 1970s and 1980s.
This production is streaming as part of the Lincoln Center at Home initiative, Broadway Fridays, where New York’s Lincoln Center offers free online streams of selected Broadway productions. This is part of the center’s efforts to continue bringing the best of the performing arts to audiences during the COVID-19 crisis.
The first show to be streamed was James Lapine’s Act One, based on the autobiography of Moss Hart, and it is still available until July 3.
Falsettos also comes with a special, free sing-a-long watch party and viewers are encouraged to use #FalsettosSingAlong on social media to participate.
The stream will be available on BroadwayHD from June 25 at 8pm ET (June 26, 8am Manila time) to June 27 at 8pm ET (June 28, 8am Manila time.)
