In the official trailer released by Walt Disney, we can see images reminiscent of scenes from the original 1998 animated movie, including scenes when Mulan first decides to take her father’s place in the Imperial Army and when she begins to train with the other men.

The movie stars Yifei Liu as Mulan, with Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan, Yoson An as Cheng Honghui, Gong Li as Xianniang, and Jet Li as the Emperor. As previously reported, the film will not be featuring the characters Shang and Mushu and will not be including songs from the animated feature. The film is set to be released in US cinemas on March 27, 2020.

“Mulan” is directed by Niki Caro, with a screenplay by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver and Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek based on the narrative poem “The Ballad of Mulan.”

When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential.
