Shakespeare’s ‘Midsummer’ Translation in Filipino to Stream Online
Tanghalang Pilipino’s Pangarap sa Isang Gabi ng Gitnang Tag-araw, the company’s Filipino translation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, will be streaming online starting on June 12!
Translated by National Artist for Theater and Literature Rolando Tinio and directed by Carlos Siguion-Reyna, the 2016 production centers around the marriage of Teseo and Hipolita, with multiple characters traversing a complicated web of romance all set in the grandiose mystery of Athens.
The cast features Teroy Guzman (also played by Randy Villarama) as Teseo, Manok Nellas (also played by Jackie Lou Blanco and Skyzx Labastilla) as Hipolita/Mustasa, Audie Gemora as Oberon, Liesl Batucan as Titanya, Marco Viaña as Lisandro, Antonette Go as Hermia, Lhorvie Nuevo as Helena, JV Ibesate as Demetrio, Aldo Vencilao as Puck, Richard Cunanan as Egeo, Rafa Siguion-Reyna as Flute/Tisbe, Paulo Carlo (also played by Tope Kliatchko) as Snout/Pader, Jonathan Tadioan as Bottom/Piramo, Doray Dayao as Snug/Leon, Ybes Bagadiong as Peter Quince, Joshua Tayco as Starvelling/Buwan/Gamu-Gamo, Eunice Pacia as Agiw, and Blanche Buhia as Gisante.
Joining Tinio and Siguion-Reyna in the creative team are Rody Vera (dramaturgy), Toym Imao (set design), John Batalla (lighting design), TJ Ramos (sound design), and James Reyes (costume design).

The online initiative is part of iWant’s Pantawid ng Tanghalan, a fundraising project that aims to help Tanghalang Pilipino in continuing to provide the public with artistic and socially relevant content, even amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. The streaming project is in collaboration with Tanghalang Pilipino, CCP, and iWant.
