Last October 21-22 2011, Lisa Macuja-Elizalde, Ballet Manila’s Artistic Director and CEO, danced the role of Juliet in Ballet Manila’s full-length production of Romeo and Juliet.

The ballet was the second performance in the prima ballerina’s Swan Song Series, her 3-year retirement plan where she performed some of the most iconic roles in classical ballet for the last time. The streaming production was filmed during her performance at the Aliw Theater last October 2011, dancing opposite Rudy de Dios as Romeo.

Romeo and Juliet is a narrative ballet based on the William Shakespeare tragedy, set to music by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev. The story follows Romeo and Juliet, who fall in love in spite of coming from two feuding families.

This is the third production that the company has streamed during this quarantine, following Macuja’s performances in Swan Lake and Don Quixote.

Romeo and Juliet was last staged by the company in 2015, following Paul Vasterling’s reinvention of the Shakespearean classic. Rudy de Dios, Brian Williamson, and Elpidio Magat alternated for the roles of Romeo, partnering with Katherine Barkman, Abigail Oliveiro, and Joan Sia respectively.

You can watch Romeo and Juliet at Ballet Manila’s Facebook page and YouTube Channel from July 4 at 6pm until July 10 at 10pm.
