Atlantis Theatrical has just announced that Ima Castro (In the Heights, Aida, Tarzan) will be part of the cast of  “Sweeney Todd” as the Beggar Woman. She joins previously announced cast members Jett Pangan, who will be playing the titular role, and Lea Salonga, who will be playing Mrs. Lovett. Also in the cast is internationally renowned baritone Andrew Fernando, who will be playing the role of Judge Turpin.

“The music of Sondheim is brilliant and complicated as it is but it seems even more complicated in this particular show. It will be a bit daunting for me but I love the challenge,” says Castro. “I’m excited as well to once again work with Ms Lea Salonga. It has been 19 years since we did Miss Saigon together at the CCP. Lastly, it has been a while since my last Atlantis show and how I’ve missed Direk Bobby Garcia and his team and the way they put together a show! I’m looking forward to so much.”

“I am very excited to be part of Atlantis Theatrical’s production of Sweeney Todd! Working on one of the greatest masterpieces in the musical theater repertoire and with an awesome company and cast is a beautiful opportunity,” shares Fernando. “I am excited to tell a beloved story through the amazing music of the genius Stephen Sondheim!”

“Sweeney Todd” won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, when it opened on Broadway in 1979. It also won the Olivier Award for Best Musical in 1980. The musical was previously staged by Repertory Philippines in 2009 starring Audie Gemora in the titular role and Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo as Mrs. Lovett.

The show will be directed by the company’s Artistic Director Bobby Garcia. It opens this October at the Theatre at Solaire. “Sweeney Todd” will be the final offering of Atlantis Theatrical’s 20th season.
