7 Things We Know about “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”

Good news for Potterheads– Harry Potter’s epic story isn’t over yet! A stage play is debuting on West End next year and it’s described as the 8th story directly tied to the then-boy wizard.
Here’s what we know:
- It’s based on a story J.K. Rowling wrote herself.
While playwright Jack Thorne wrote the play with John Tiffany directing, the story came from J.K. Rowling herself. It’s definitely part of the Harry Potter universe. She also calls it the “eight story in the series”.
- It picks up where Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows left off.
Last we saw Harry and friends, they were sending their own kids off to Hogwarts. The play will show insight on a grown-up Harry, now “an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and father of three school-age children”.
- The ‘Cursed Child’ might be Harry’s younger son, Albus Severus.
According to the play’s official site: “While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted.” Sounds interesting! If you remember, he was the son that was worried about being sorted in to Slytherin.
- It’s a pretty big production.
It features a cast of over 30, and we can’t wait to see who will fill in the iconic roles that Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and friends have made indelible for 10 years and 8 movies. Those will be some tough shoes to fill!
- It features music from Imogen Heap.
This “epic story of love, courage, adventure and the power of the imagination” (according to show producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender) will also feature the musical stylings of the British singer-songwriter.
- It’s a two-parter.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to wait years before knowing how this story concludes. Both parts I and II will premiere next year. Both shows are intended to be seen the same day, with Part I running during the matinee and Part II during the evening.

- The story’s always been meant for the stage.
When asked why J.K. Rowling didn’t just write an 8th book or a script to produce a movie, she had this to say: “I’m confident that when audiences see Harry Potter And The Cursed Child they will understand why we chose to tell this story in this way.”
We’re not complaining! This will certainly introduce theater to a broader audience, and we can’t wait! Previews start on June 7, 2016 and opens July 30 at the Palace Theatre in London.
