‘Wicked’ Film Adaptation Now in PH Cinemas
The wait is finally over for Filipino fans as the highly anticipated Wicked film adaptation lands in cinemas across the Philippines starting today, November 20. Based on the beloved Broadway musical, the movie explores the untold story of Elphaba and Glinda, two women destined to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good in the magical Land of Oz.
Directed by Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), Wicked features Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Ariana Grande as Glinda, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Ethan Slater as Boq, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard.
This first installment of Wicked focuses on the entire first act of the musical, drawing audiences into the characters’ formative years—from their initial rivalry at Shiz University to their unexpected friendship and the events that lead Elphaba to “defy gravity.”
Adding to the excitement, the official Wicked soundtrack drops on November 22, coinciding with the film’s U.S. release. According to Billboard, the album features 12 reimagined tracks from the musical’s first act, including No One Mourns the Wicked and Defying Gravity. The story will conclude in the second installment, slated for release in November 2025.
Starbucks has also partnered with Universal Pictures to launch exclusive Wicked-themed drinks and merchandise for a limited time.
Glinda’s Pink Potion features a Mango Dragonfruit Starbucks Refreshers Beverage with a swirl of creamy coconut milk and a sparkle of ruby-red cookie crumbs. In contrast, Elphaba’s Cold Brew is a concoction of Starbucks Signature Cold Brew topped with Matcha flavored cream foam and Pure Matcha powder sprinkles.
While both beverages, as well as a Wicked Starbucks card, are available in all stores, the merchandise is sold at select locations. You can view participating locations here. You can find a close-up look at two of the six tumblers below.
Filipino audiences are also in for a special treat before every Wicked screening: the Awiting Wicked music video. Featuring 30 talented Filipinos selected through a nationwide TikTok contest, the video celebrates local talent as they perform the musical’s iconic song, Defying Gravity.
