The full trailer for the upcoming remake of West Side Story has been released.

Steven Spielberg will be directing this version of the iconic musical and it is due to come out in U.S. theaters this December. The film is adapted from the original 1957 Broadway musical written by Arthur Laurents, with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and concept, direction, and choreography by Jerome Robbins.

The musical was previously adapted into film in 1961, winning multiple Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Rita Moreno, who will be also appearing in the new film as Valentina.

As previously reported, the remake stars newcomer Rachel Zegler as Maria, Ansel Elgort as Tony, Ariana DeBose as Anita, David Alvarez as Bernardo, Josh Andrés Rivera as Chino, Brian d’Arcy James as Officer Krupke, and Corey Stoll as Lieutenant Schrank.

West Side Story is loosely based on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and is set in 1950s New York City as two young, idealistic lovers, Maria and Tony, find themselves caught between warring street gangs, the “American” Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks.

A local staging by Repertory Philippines ran in 1981 and by Stages in 2008, while another production by Concertus Manila ran at The Theatre at Solaire in 2017.

West Side Story features many iconic songs such as “Somewhere”, “Maria”, “I Feel Pretty”, “America”, “Something’s Coming”, “Tonight”, and many more. Zegler is heard singing a few lines from “Tonight” in the trailer. Moreno’s character appears briefly in the trailer, giving sage advice to the main characters.

West Side Story will debut in U.S. cinemas on December 10, 2021.
