WATCH: ‘West Side Story’ Film Remake Trailer is Online
A trailer for Steven Spielberg’s upcoming West Side Story remake has been released during the 2021 Academy Awards ceremony.
West Side Story is a modern-day Romeo and Juliet plot where two New York Street gangs fight for turf control, complicated by a gang member falling in love with a rival gang member’s sister.
It will star Rachel Zegler as Maria, Ansel Elgort as Tony, Ariana DeBose as Anita, David Alvarez as Bernardo, Mike Faist as Riff, Corey Stoll as Police Lieutenant Schrank, Brian d’Arcy James as Police Sargeant Krupke, Rita Moreno as Valentina, Curtiss Cook as Abe, and more.
Adapted from the 1957 Broadway musical by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Arthur Laurents, the film’s screenplay is by Tony Kushner with choreography by Justin Peck.
In 2017, a touring production performed at The Theater at Solaire. Repertory Philippines and Stages also mounted local productions in 1981 and 2008 respectively.
This upcoming film was originally set for a December 18, 2020 release. It will now premiere on December 10, 2021 coinciding with the original film’s 60th anniversary.
