“Up Here” Musical TV Series is Announced
Streaming platform Hulu has ordered Up Here, a new musical romantic comedy series, to be helmed by musical theater veterans.
According to a report by Variety, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the Oscar and Emmy Award-winning songwriting duo behind Disney’s Frozen and Frozen 2 and Steven Levenson, who wrote the book for the Tony Award-winning Broadway hit Dear Evan Hansen, and TV writer Danielle Sanchez-Witzel (New Girl, My Name Is Earl) will all serve as writers and executive producers on the series.
Levenson will also serve as showrunner, while Anderson-Lopez and Lopez will write original songs for the series and Thomas Kail (Hamilton, In the Heights) will direct. Anderson-Lopez and Lopez wrote a stage version of “Up Here” that opened in San Diego back in 2015.
Up Here will be set in New York City in the waning days of 1999, and focus on the extraordinary story of one ordinary couple, as they fall in love – and discover that the single greatest obstacle to finding happiness together might just be themselves – and the treacherous world of memories, obsessions, fears, and fantasies that lives inside their heads.
While no other plot details have been revealed, casting is currently underway with production set to begin this summer in New York. The show will have eight episodes.
