Tony Awards 2020 Nominations Announced
The pandemic has affected even this year’s Tony Awards. From postponing the nominations and awards indefinitely to cutting short its eligibility window for shows. This resulted in only 18 plays and musicals being eligible for this year’s awards.
Jagged Little Pill had the most number of nominations, with Moulin Rouge! in second–including Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for Aaron Tveit, the only person nominated in his category this year.
Slave Play had the most nominations for a straight play, including one for Fil-Am Clint Ramos for Scenic Design. He is also nominated this year for Costume Design for his work in The Rose Tattoo. Slave Play also breaks Tony nomination records by being the most nominated play in its awards history.
Audra McDonald also earned her ninth Tony nomination this year for Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune. Tom Hiddleston also earned his first nomination for his Broadway debut in Betrayal.
The nominations were announced last night by Aladdin actor, James Monroe Iglehart and streamed on YouTube. As for the ceremony itself, while there are no firm dates set, organizers are eyeing on the ceremony happening early December.
