Philippine Theater Actors Guild, Inc. (TAG PH), in collaboration with the Fulbright International Program and co-presented by the Ateneo Fine Arts Department, will be launching the Fulbright Masterclass in Physical Theater this August. It will be a three-part workshop series for aspiring and professional actors alike that will incorporate a mix of lectures, physical exercises, and plenary or group discussions. The series aims to deepen the understanding, appreciation, and application of the craft by incorporating Filipino sensibilities to Western techniques.

Facilitating the workshop is Fulbright specialist, professor, director, playwright, and author Dr. Kiara Pipino. Born in Italy and based in Tennessee, Pipino is trained in the tradition of Commedia dell’Arte and is a certified instructor of the Michael Chekhov technique–two disciplines at the heart of this workshop series. Additionally, she is a teacher of Theatre for Social Change from the perspectives of feminists, minorities, and immigrants. Pipino has been working with Filipino theater practitioners since 2015, hosting workshops on the Chekhov technique in collaboration with the Ateneo de Manila University and the Philippine Educational Theatre Association (PETA).

The workshops will be divided into three eight-hour sessions across a two week period, each focusing on different modules. The first session will be an overview of the Michael Chekhov technique, with activities centered on movement and theater physicality. This will be followed by a module on Commedia dell’Arte, which aims to hone participants’ skills in physical comedy. The third and last workshop session will incorporate techniques from Augusto Boal with archetypes from Commedia dell’Arte and elements of the Michael Chekhov technique. The series will conclude with a showcase by the participants, for which tickets will be available for purchase.

Workshop attendees can join either as participants or observers. Participants will join exercises with the Fulbright specialist and access handouts as well as learning materials. Observers have the opportunity to learn from the Fulbright specialist and survey the workshop participants’ exercises on-location.

TAG members and partners can purchase tickets at P3,500 per module or P9,000 for all three (3) modules. Regular participants can purchase tickets at P5,500 per module or P13,500 for all three (3) modules. Onsite observers can purchase tickets at P500 per module and P1,500 for all three (3) modules.

The masterclass workshop series will be held at the Mirror Studios, SJG Building, Makati on the following dates:

August 10 (10AM to 6:30PM) – Movement and Theatre Physicality: The Michael Chekhov Technique

August 11 (10AM to 6:30PM) – Physical Comedy: The Art of Commedia Dell’Arte
