Philippine Ballet Theatre’s (PBT) annual holiday offering of The Nutcracker is returning to the stage this December, this time at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Newport World Resorts.

What sets this Nutcracker apart from others is that it was specifically created for the company in 1995, choreographed by Gelsey Kirkland and Michael Chernov. Prior to the pandemic, the company has staged this ballet for nine consecutive years. The show finally returns for its 10th consecutive run for four performances only on December 16, 3pm and 8pm, and on December 17, 3pm and 7:30pm.

Making up for lost time, Artistic Director Ronilo Jaynario has restaged the show with new additions to the choreography and a cast of over a hundred artists of different ages. The company of dancers includes little ballerinas as angels, mother ginger dancers, party kids, dolls, and a whole line up of colorful characters.

Set against the backdrop of sparkling snowflakes and magical land of the sweets, with the acclaimed music of Tchaikovsky, Philippine Ballet Theater is set to bring Clara’s magical encounters to life. The story originated from the The Nutcracker and the Mouse King (German: Nussknacker und Mausekönig), a story written in 1816 by the German writer E.T.A. Hoffmann. In this tale, Clara’s favorite Christmas toy, the Nutcracker, comes alive and, after
defeating the evil Mouse King in battle, whisks her away to a magical kingdom of sweets populated by dolls.

Mathew Davo and Jessa Tangalin will take on the leads as Nutcracker Prince and Sugarplum fairy. Making their Nutcracker debut are company artists Therese Riego and Sophie Tiangco who will be alternating as Clara. Tiangco is one among many of the cast members who were originally cast as Nutcracker kids in previous productions.

The show will run on December 16, 3pm and 8pm and on December 17, 3pm and 7:30pm at the Newport Performing Arts Theater of Newport World Resorts. Tickets are available at Ticketworld.
